Queen Anne takes the male-dominated genre of the history play and places women at its centre, portraying fierce friendship, sexuality, jealousy, war, politics and betrayal through the eyes and inner lives of women.
Exploring the life of one of England’s little-known monarchs, Queen Anne follows the sovereign and her close friendship with confidante, Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. Set in 1702, William III is on the throne and England is on the verge of war. Princess Anne is to become Queen and begins to pursue her power with advice from her advisors. Soon, she must decide where her allegiances lie and if she must sacrifice her closest relationship for the sake of the country.
